Welcome to the Bolivia Train guide

The Empresa Ferroviaria Andina (FCA) runs the train network of western Bolivia. Its most famous passenger corridor links Oruro with Villazón, on the border with Argentina, crossing the Altiplano and passing through Uyuni —gateway to the salt flat— and the red canyons of Tupiza. Two trains run this route: the fast Expreso del Sur and the Wara Wara del Sur, which stops at all twelve stations. Here you will find schedules, indicative fares, the network map and a planner to organise your trip.

Expreso del Sur

Oruro ↔ Villazón · express service · 6 stops

The fast, most comfortable southern service. It stops at the main stations —Oruro, Río Mulato, Uyuni, Atocha, Tupiza and Villazón— with Ejecutivo and Salón carriages.

Wara Wara del Sur

Oruro ↔ Villazón · every station · 12 stops

The train that links the whole corridor: it stops at all twelve stations, including the Altiplano villages. Cheaper, with Ejecutivo, Salón and Popular classes.

Frequently asked questions

Two: the Expreso del Sur (fast, stopping at the main stations) and the Wara Wara del Sur (which stops at all twelve stations). Both are operated by the Ferroviaria Andina (FCA).
The Expreso del Sur leaves Oruro on Tuesday and Friday; the Wara Wara del Sur on Wednesday and Sunday. In the opposite direction (Villazón→Oruro) they run on other days. See the schedule page.
It depends on the leg and the class (Salón or Ejecutivo). From around Bs 20 (~$2.87 USD) for short trips to about Bs 170 (~$24.43 USD) for the full route in Ejecutivo. These are indicative values — see the fares page.
Uyuni is the gateway to the Salar de Uyuni. Tours to the largest salt desert in the world set out from its station.
The corridor ends at Villazón, on the border. From there you cross on foot to La Quiaca (Argentina), with buses on to Jujuy and Salta.
