Atocha is a mining town wedged into a ravine at 3,658 m, on the stretch between Uyuni and Tupiza. It is a stop of the Expreso del Sur – Ferrobús: southbound on Tuesday (arrives 08:08, leaves 08:28) and northbound on Thursday (arrives 21:40, leaves 21:55).

Surrounded by mining hills, Atocha marks the start of the descent towards the canyons of Tupiza. The landscape changes: the Altiplano gives way to ravines and warm-coloured rock formations.
