Tupiza, known as “la Joya Bella de Bolivia” (the beautiful jewel of Bolivia), is ringed by red canyons and hills. It is a stop of the Expreso del Sur – Ferrobús: southbound it arrives on Tuesday at 11:43 and leaves at 13:23; northbound it arrives on Thursday at 17:20 and leaves at 18:10.
At 2,850 m, with a milder climate than the Altiplano, Tupiza is the base for horseback and 4×4 trips through the Quebrada de Palala, the Cañón del Inca and the Valle de los Machos (Valley of the Machos). It is also famous as the setting of the last days of the outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
